Copy

Use the ATR CustomTools Copy feature to move, copy, rename, assign document attribute values and/or add SOLIDWORKS documents into a compressed folder (*.zip) in a batch. Actions available in the Copy feature are described in the Copy Pane section's Action subtopic below.

Click the Copy button in the ATR CustomTools toolbar or click ATR CustomTools, Copy.

The Copy pane appears on the left side and the ATR CustomTools pane appears on the right side.

The Copy pane is used to set up new Property values for the components processed. The ATR CustomTools pane is used to determine which documents are processed during the Copy operation.

If you perform the Copy command on a document with unsaved changes, you are prompted to save or ignore the changes. You can proceed with the copy operation even if you ignore the changes.

TIP: The Copy command can also be performed without any document open. In this case, ATR CustomTools creates a temporary document called CustomCopy. This temporary document is not saved and does not refer to any existing document.

Use the following links to jump directly to the section of the Copy feature side panes you are looking for.

Copy Pane Features

Action

Select the documents to process from the ATR CustomTools pane on the right side of the SOLIDWORKS window.

Icon

Determines the action to be done for the selected documents.

Save As Available when the model is open in SOLIDWORKS.

Saves the selected documents into the destination folder set in the ATR CustomTools pane, using ATR CustomTools' Property-based file naming rules of the selected Project.

Files in the listing that are NOT selected for the operation but refer to files being saved as, will have their references updated to the new copies; similar to what SOLIDWORKS Save As operation does for open documents. Files whose references are updated must not be read-only.

Save As Copy Copies the selected documents into the destination folder set in the ATR CustomTools pane, using ATR CustomTools' Property-based file naming rules of the selected Project.

Updates all references of the copies within the current process; never modifying any of the source documents.

Rename And Move Renames the selected documents and moves them into the new destination folder set in the ATR CustomTools pane, using ATR CustomTools' Property-based file naming rules of the selected Project.

Files in the listing that are NOT selected for the operation but refer to the renamed files, will have their references updated and thus must not be read-only.

Rename And Move is not supported for files in SOLIDWORKS PDM.

Write Property Values Writes the Properties that are set as modified (i.e. the disk icon is pressed) to all documents selected in the ATR CustomTools pane.

If modifying a property that is part of a combination, the combination is resolved for each selected file individually. Sequences are shown by their name and generated dynamically for the files during the process.

Zip Select the Zip action to compress the selected files into a zip file.

Configurations

Icon

Determines the target configuration of the document properties where the new Property values are written to on the ATR CustomTools Copy operation.

Document properties Modified Property values are written into the SOLIDWORKS document level custom properties and all configuration-specific Property values are deleted.
Active Configuration The changed and/or new Property values are written to the currently active or referenced model configuration.
All configurations The Properties are written into all existing configurations of the selected document.
Property Specific Select the Property Specific option as the target configuration to write the assigned property values at the level specified in the Properties settings.

You can set up the desired document level to write the property value using the Initial Configuration setting in the Basic Information page of the Property Wizard.

Document properties and active configuration Write the value assigned to a Property into the document properties and also to all configurations of the SOLIDWORKS model. Property values written to Document properties and active configuration appear in the document's Custom level Summary Information and also in the Configuration Specific level of Summary Information in the configuration active at the moment of saving.
Document properties and all configurations

Write the value assigned to a Property into the document properties and also to all configurations of the SOLIDWORKS model. Property values written to Document properties and all configurations appear in the document's Custom level Summary Information and also in the Configuration Specific level of Summary Information in all configurations at the moment of saving.

Please refer to the SOLIDWORKS help for more information about the SOLIDWORKS document's Summary Information levels.

TIP: See use case examples about the target configuration options in the Properties pane help.
Include only active/referenced configuration Select this option to include only the active or currently referenced model configuration in the output file created by an action performed by the Copy feature.

The Include only active/referenced configuration option is available only for the following actions:

  • Save As
  • Save As Copy

For actions that do not support this option, it is hidden.

Scope of the Properties

Icon

Determines the document type where the new Property values are saved. Properties whose value is not changed in the Copy pane are copied as they are in the source document.

By selecting the document type scope, you can also filter the Properties shown in the Copy pane:

Model

Shows Properties with scope Model.

Write new values into the Properties with scope Model. Applies to all 3D models.

Drawing

Shows Properties with scope Drawing.

Write new values into the Properties with scope Drawing. Applies only to drawings.

Part

Shows Properties with scope Part.

Write new values into the Properties with scope Part. Applies only to parts.

Assembly

Shows Properties with scope Assembly.

Write new values into the Properties with scope Assembly. Applies only to assemblies.

Target Project

Project

Determines the project where the copied documents are assigned to. Available projects are retrieved from the Projects options in the Profile Options tab in ATR CustomTools Options.

Properties

The rest of the Copy pane shows the Properties defined in the profile. To assign new Property values for the output documents, set new values for the desired Properties using the controls in the Copy pane. Properties left empty are copied from the source documents without any changes.

The Write icons for ATR CustomTools combination properties are always enabled, allowing the user to choose whether to generate and write the combination values in copy that are used for other purposes than file naming.

For Example: If a combination includes properties for which the user does not assign a new value and the files are stored in an external data source like a PDM system, the properties are read from the source files. Using the Write icon, the user can choose whether to generate and write the new combination value.

ATR CustomTools Pane Features

The following controls are located in the ATR CustomTools pane, which appears on the right side of the SOLIDWORKS window when the Copy command is performed.

The Insert options are located in the ATR CustomTools pane.

Selected Model

Inserts the structure of the selected model into the list of documents to be processed. The existing document structure is replaced by the selected model's structure when you click the Selected Model button.

TIP: Suppressed models are also retrieved into the document list and can be processed as well as unsuppressed models.
Assembly Select the desired assembly and insert it with its structure into the list of documents to be processed.
Folder Insert the desired folder into the list of documents to be processed.
Files Insert the desired files into the list of documents to be processed.

If a file has more than one instance in an assembly and the instances are from UNC (Uniform Naming Convention) or from the mapped network paths, those instances are considered as one file because a file cannot have more than one instance in the document structure shown in Copy.

Advanced

The Advanced options are located in the ATR CustomTools pane.
