Additional Options for STEP

The additional options for the STEP documents provides some advanced options for the file conversion rules which output file type is STEP.

Output as:

Solid/Surface geometry Exports the geometry as solids and surface bodies.
3D curves Exports the solid and surface bodies as wireframe entities. All 3D curves (composite curves, 3D wires, imported curves, and so on) are also saved.
Export sketch entities Exports all 2D and 3D sketches in the document in addition to all the items in 3D curves.

Info If you select 3D curves or Export sketch entities, you can open the exported STEP files only in SOLIDWORKS 2001 Plus or later.

Because you cannot group the sketch elements together in a STEP file, when you open the exported STEP file in SOLIDWORKS:

- All lines and splines are imported into a single 3D sketch.
- Circles, ellipses, and parabolas are imported into individual 2D sketches.

Version Determines the version supported by the target system.

Custom Component Names:

With the custom component name options, you can define a custom formula to be used to generate names for the STEP files converted in the assembly structure. You can use your CUSTOMTOOLS Model Properties and, the Model Combinations to setup the customized naming formula for the output files.

Use custom component names Customize the output names of the components converted to the STEP format. Select this option to setup the custom format string for naming the components to the STEP format. While you have this option selected, use the Format string box to setup the custom component name formula.
Format string Use the Format string box to determine the custom filenaming formula for the STEP files created using the selected File Conversion rule.

Click the RightArrow button to select your Model Properties and/or the Model Combinations into the Format string to have dynamic filenames for the output files.

Target Filename Blob Colors:

Component naming rule could be dynamic. Attribute blobs are color coded in the Format string box so that you can recognize the parts of the customized component name easier. The following colors are used to identify the blobs:

Color Meaning Example Blob
  Model property ModelProperty
  Model combination ModelCombination
  Invalid item InvalidItem

If you get the invalid item blob into the target filename, please ensure that the item selected in the target filename exist and also check the spelling of the target filename item names.
