CUSTOMTOOLS menu commands in SOLIDWORKS
The most of the CUSTOMTOOLS  commands are available only if there is at  least one document open
in  SOLIDWORKS. The  Copy,  Print/Convert,  Import, Options  and  the Server  commands  are always
available in the CUSTOMTOOLS menu even if you do not have any documents open in SOLIDWORKS.
NOTE: The Import  feature is launched in the Import  SOLIDWORKS Files mode when there  are
no documents open in SOLIDWORKS while the Import command is clicked.
In the CUSTOMTOOLS  toolbar, all the icons are  visible whether or not  a file is open in  SOLIDWORKS
but only the ones that can be performed without open document are enabled.

New Features
The new  features section  is used to  describe the  completely new features  that have not  existed in
any of the older releases of CUSTOMTOOLS.
Compatible with SOLIDWORKS 2017
CUSTOMTOOLS 2017  brings compatibility  for the SOLIDWORKS  2017. CUSTOMTOOLS  2017 is  still
compatible also with older versions of SOLIDWORKS back to the SOLIDWORKS 2014 version.
General Improvements to Installer
Size of the  setup packages is  now significantly smaller as  all 3    party components are  downloaded
rd
automatically during  installation if they  are not present on  target system. This  includes for instance
Microsoft  .NET  Framework, Microsoft  SQL  Server  Database Engine  and  Management  Studio and
Microsoft Visual C++ runtime libraries.
The most  recent setup package  is cached locally  under CUSTOMTOOLS  Downloads folder in  user’s
documents.  This enables  to  modify  installation afterwards  without  having  original setup  package
available.
Structure  of  features  in the  Custom  Setup  dialog  box  has  been  revised  so that  CUSTOMTOOLS
Network  License Manager,  CUSTOMTOOLS  Database  Server and  CUSTOMTOOLS  Service are  now
under Server  hive whereas SQL  Server Management  Studio and CUSTOMTOOLS  Administration are
under Server Tools hive.
CUSTOMTOOLS setup package now also  contains SQL Server Management Studio. Tool  can be used
for advanced database management such as creating database back-up files.
Changing of Serial Number
It’s now possible  to change CUSTOMTOOLS serial number by  using Modify option for CUSTOMTOOLS
Installation  in  the  Programs  and  Features  dialog  box.  Simply  type  in  new  serial  number  in the

Customer Information dialog box. If network serial number  is entered, then setup wizard will also ask
for network license host computer and port.
NOTE:  If you  are changing  from activation  based  license to  network  license, remember  to
first   transfer   activated    CUSTOMTOOLS   license   by   selecting   Manage   CUSTOMTOOLS
Licenses… in activated products.

Service Packs
This section  describes new  features and changed  functionality introduced  in CUSTOMTOOLS  2017
service packs.
Service Pack 0.0
Limited Upgrading of the CUSTOMTOOLS Database in Beta Releases
CUSTOMTOOLS 2017 introduces  a new limitation related to the  CUSTOMTOOLS database upgrading
feature. The new  limitation on the database upgrading feature  prevents the end user  to accidentally
upgrade a CUSTOMTOOLS database created with  an official release version of CUSTOMTOOLS  to the
Beta versions of CUSTOMTOOLS.
This new limitation is  implemented to enhance capabilities to test and become  familiar with the new
features  introduced in  an upcoming  CUSTOMTOOLS major  version or,  a  new service  pack release
outside of an actual production environment.
License Level Requirement
No license level requirements.
Beta Version Notification on the Installation
The   CUSTOMTOOLS   Installer   in   the   2017  version    introduces   a  better   notification   for   the
CUSTOMTOOLS Beta and early-visibility  releases. When the user is about to start the  installation of a
CUSTOMTOOLS Beta or an early-visibility version, the notification  message shown in Figure 2Figure 3
is displayed  stating that  the Beta  and early-visibility  versions should not  be used in  the production
environment.
Beta versions of  CUSTOMTOOLS are development  versions which means that  the major version  the
Beta represents,  is not  yet ready. Beta  versions may  not be stable  either and also  for that  reason,
the Beta versions should not be used in production.
For   the   reasons   above,  use   the   Beta   versions   of   CUSTOMTOOLS   outside  your   production
environment to test and  to get familiar with the  new features introduced. With the  Beta version, you
::

Page 12
What’s New in CUSTOMTOOLS 2017 SP0
can also  give feedback to the  CUSTOMTOOLS development  team about your experience  of the new
version.
NOTE: A CUSTOMTOOLS database  created with an official release version of CUSTOMTOOLS,
cannot be upgraded  with any Beta version of CUSTOMTOOLS.  Similarly, databases cloned or
created with Beta version  of CUSTOMTOOLS can’t be upgraded to  next version but can only  be used
with current Beta versions of CUSTOMTOOLS.
Figure 2 - A notification message about CUSTOMTOOLS Beta version
License Level Requirement
No license level requirements.
Compatibility to Install Side-By-Side with Future Releases
CUSTOMTOOLS  2017 introduces  an  enhancement  for  the product  version  compatibility  while  an
older  CUSTOMTOOLS  version  is  being  installed  side-by-side  with  a  newer  CUSTOMTOOLS  major
version. By this  enhancement, it will be possible  to install CUSTOMTOOLS 2017  version side-by-side
with newer version of CUSTOMTOOLS in the future.
::
CUSTOMTOOLS product of ATR Soft Oy  ::  info@customtools.info  ::  www.customtools.info  ::
Page 13
What’s New in CUSTOMTOOLS 2017 SP0
So  in  the   future,  if  you  already   have  for  example  the  CUSTOMTOOLS   2018  installed  in  your
workstation,   you  can   still  install   the   CUSTOMTOOLS  2017   version  side-by-side   to  the   same
workstation.
NOTE:  If you  already CUSTOMTOOLS  2017  installed in  your workstation,  you are  not  able to
install CUSTOMTOOLS  2016 or  an older version  to the  same workstation  without uninstalling
the existing CUSTOMTOOLS products first.
License Level Requirement
No license level requirements.
Visual Appearance Updates
Visual appearance in CUSTOMTOOLS 2017 is updated. Updates  in the CUSTOMTOOLS user interface
apply to  several parts of  CUSTOMTOOLS. High resolution  displays and using  of high DPI setting  are
now better supported.

Cloning CUSTOMTOOLS Databases
Testing the new major version of CUSTOMTOOLS safely and properly require that  at least a replicated
production environment could be  used. CUSTOMTOOLS 2017 introduces a new feature  which allows
the end user to clone the production database of CUSTOMTOOLS.
A cloned CUSTOMTOOLS database  cannot be used with an official release version of  CUSTOMTOOLS
to avoid unexpected issues in the real production environment.
To clone your  CUSTOMTOOLS database, CUSTOMTOOLS 2017 have a new  command called Clone in
the  right-click  menu  (Figure  13)  associated  to  the  CUSTOMTOOLS  Database   selected  from the
Database View in the CUSTOMTOOLS Administration Tool.
